The AD8153 is a protocol-agnostic, single-channel 2:1 switch with three differential CML inputs and three differential CML outputs. The AD8159 is another addition to the Xstream family and is suitable for similar applications that require multiple channels.
The AD8153 is optimized for NRZ signaling and has data rates of up to 3.2 Gbps per port. Each port offers 2-level input equalization and 4-stage output pre-emphasis.
The device has a built-in 2:1 multiplexer and a 1:2 demultiplexer and is available in three modes of operation: pin-mode, serial mode, and hybrid mode. In pin mode, channel switching, equalization, and pre-emphasis can only be controlled using external pins. In serial mode, the device can be controlled via the I2C interface and advanced features such as additional pre-emphasis settings and output enable can be accessed. In hybrid mode, users can access advanced features using the I2C interface, but control the channel switch via an external pin.
The AD8153 is primarily used to support backplane-side and line-interface side redundancy for serial links. The device has both unicast and dualcast capabilities, so it supports 1+1 or 1:1 redundancy.
When using a mix of dualcast and self-looping modes, the AD8153 can also be leveraged to test high-speed serial links by copying the input data and then transmitting it to the destination port and test equipment simultaneously.
