These devices are half-duplex differential transceivers, with optimized features for applications in PROFIBUS (EN 50170). The driver outputs a differential voltage that exceeds the PROFIBUS requirement of 54 2.1 V Load. The development of a signal transmission rate of up to 40 Mbps technology has enabled high data transmission speeds. At a lower bus capacitance, low signal distortion is provided.

The SN65HVD1176 and SN75HVD1176 meet or exceed the requirements of the ANSI standard TIA/EIA-485-A (RS-485) for differential twisted pair network transmission. The driver output and receiver input are connected together to form a half-duplex bus port with one-fifth of the unit load, allowing the bus to 160 nodes in a bus. The receiver output logic is high when stuck in a bus line that is short-circuited, open, or without any driver active.
