With switching frequencies up to 500kHz, the LT ® 1510 current mode PWM battery charger is the smallest, simplest, and most efficient solution to modern fast charging, including lithium-ion (Li-ion) rechargeable batteries, nickel-metal hydride (NiMH batteries*) and nickel-cadmium (NiCd)* that require constant current and/or constant voltage charging. An internal switch capable of delivering 1.5A DC (2A peak current). The built-in current sense resistor of 0.1 ohms makes it easy to program the charge current. A resistor (or programming current from the DAC) is the charge current (1.5A) set within 5% of the accuracy requirement. The LT1510 meets critical constant voltage rechargeable lithium battery requirements with 0.5% reference voltage accuracy. The LT1510 can be charged from a 2V to 20V battery. Current ground detection is not necessary and can be directly connected to the negative ground of the battery. The saturation switch operates at 200kHz (LT1510-5 at 500kHz) for high charging efficiency and small inductor size. There is no need to block between the diode chip and the battery, because the chip goes into sleep mode when the wall adapter is unplugged by only 3μA. Soft start and shutdown capabilities are also provided. The LT1510 is thermally resistive in a 16-pin fusion resulting power SO package with a 50°C/W, 8-lead SO and 16-pin PDIP.
