The DAC features a segmented architecture with 16 resistor strings selected by 4 MSBs in the DAC latch. Both contacts of each segment are buffered with amplifiers and fed into a 12-bit DAC to provide 12-bit resolution. This architecture ensures 16-bit monotonicity. The input offset voltages of the two buffer amplifiers are closely matched, giving the device excellent integral linearity.
In addition to its excellent accuracy specifications, the AD7846 also offers a comprehensive microprocessor interface. It has 16 data input/output pins and additional control lines (CS, R/W, LDAC, and CLR). R/W and CS allow reading and writing of input/output latches, which are read-back functions useful for automated testing devices. LDAC allows for simultaneous updates of DACs in multiple DAC systems, while CLR lines can reset the contents of DAC latches to 00 . . . 000 or 10 . . . 000, depending on the state of R/W. This means that the DAC output can be reset to 0 V in both unipolar and bipolar configurations.
The AD7846 is available in 28-pin plastic, ceramic, LCCC, and PLCC packages.
