The A3938 is a three-phase brushless DC motor controller. The A3938's high-current gate drive capability allows for driving a wide range of power MOSFETs and supports motor supply voltages up to 50 V. The A3938 integrates bootstrap high-end drivers to minimize the number of external components required to drive the N-channel MOSFET driver.
An internal fixed downtime PWM current control circuit can be used to adjust the maximum load current to the desired value. The user can set the peak load current limit by selecting the input reference voltage and external induction resistor. The external RC timing network of the user's choice sets the fixed downtime pulse duration. For additional flexibility, the PWM input can provide speed/torque control, where the internal current control circuit sets a limit on the maximum current.
The A3938 features synchronous rectification. This shortens the current path through the power MOSFET reverse diode during PWM aperiodic current decay. This minimizes power dissipation from the MOSFET, eliminates the need for external power clamping diodes, and makes for a more economical option for MOSFET drivers.
The A3938 provides rectification logic for Hall sensor ICs configured with 120 degrees pitch. The Hall input pin is pulled up to an endogenous 5 V reference. Power MOSFET protection features include bootstrap capacitor charge current monitoring, regulator undervoltage monitoring, motor pin ground short, and overheat shutdown.
