The A5348 is a low-current CMOS circuit that provides all the features needed for an ionizing smoke detector. The networking feature allows up to 125 devices to be interconnected, and all devices can sound an alarm when any device detects smoke. Special features are also integrated into the design to facilitate the collaboration and testing of the finished smoke detector.

The built-in oscillator and timing circuitry dramatically reduces standby power consumption by sensing smoke for every 10 milliseconds and then shutting down the device for 1.66 seconds. A low battery check is performed every 24 switching cycles. This very low-power device uses an ionization detector to replace other types of sensor ICs or switches and can be used in several other battery-powered safety applications.
