The device contains a linear Hall sensor integrated circuit with a copper current path close to the surface of the wafer. The current applied through this copper current path generates a magnetic field that can be sensed by the integrated Hall IC and converted into a proportional voltage. By bringing the magnetic signal closer to the Hall sensor, the device accuracy is optimized.
The slope of the device's output is proportional to the current from IP+ to IP– (pins 1 and 2 to pins 3 and 4). With internal resistance of 0.6 mΩ (EX package) and 1.2 mΩ (LC package), this conduction path provides a non-intrusive measurement interface for applications requiring energy savings.
While the termination of the current path is insulated from the sensor IC wires, the ACS711 is ideal for low-end current-sensing applications, providing sufficient internal creepage and isolation space for low AC or DC operating voltage applications. The size of the copper wire allows the device to operate under overcurrent conditions of up to 5×.
The ACS711 is available in small surface-mount packages: SOIC8 and QFN12. The pin frame is 100% matte tin plated and is compatible with standard lead-free printed circuit board assembly processes. The device does not contain lead inside, except for the current RoHS-exempt high-temperature leaded solder balls used in the flip method. The device is fully calibrated prior to shipment.
