The bandgap circuit design used in the AD581 offers several advantages over traditional Zener breakdown diode technology. The most important of these is the complete accuracy without the need for external devices and the significant increase in the stability of low-power systems. In addition, the device has a typical total supply current of 750 μA, which includes an output buffer amplifier that provides a maximum current of 10 mA. The long-term stability of this bandgap design is comparable to that of select Zener reference diodes.
The AD581 is recommended as a reference for 8-bit, 10-bit, or 12-bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs) that require an external precision reference source. The device is also ideal for all types of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) with up to 14-bit accuracy, whether in successive approximations or integrated designs, and typically outperforms standard stand-alone references.
The AD581J/K/L is rated for operating temperatures ranging from 0°C to +70°C and the AD581S/T/U is from -55°C to +125°C. All grades are packaged in a sealed three-pin TO-5 metal cap case.
