The AD5930 is a waveform generator that supports programmable frequency sweep and output bursts. The device uses embedded digital processing technology that supports enhanced frequency control to generate synthetic analog or digital frequency step waveforms. Pre-programmed frequency profiles avoid continuous write cycles, freeing up important DSP/microcontroller resources. The waveform starts from a known phase and can be continuously increased, making it easy to determine the phase shift.
The AD5930 supports three operating modes. In continuous output mode, the device outputs the desired frequency for a defined period of time and then steps to the next frequency. The length of time the device outputs a specific frequency can be pre-programmed and the device can be automatically incremented or externally incremented via the CTRL pin. In burst mode, the device outputs its frequency for a certain period of time, then returns to the intermediate level for another predefined period of time and steps to the next frequency. In MSB mode, the device produces a digital output.
To program a device, the user enters the starting frequency, frequency step, number of increments, and the time interval at which the device stays at each frequency point. The frequency profile can be started by switching the CTRL pin.
The device offers a variety of different scanning methods. The frequency scans the entire frequency range continuously up and down in triangular scan mode, or up in sawtooth scan mode, but returns to the initial frequency before initiating the scan again. In addition, a single frequency or burst can be generated without any scanning.
The AD5930 writes data via a three-wire serial interface and is capable of operating at clock rates up to 40 MHz. The device operates from a 2.3 V to 5.5 V supply and has a standby function that shuts down parts of the device that are not in use.
The AD5930 is available in a 20-pin TSSOP package.
