The AD5934 is a high-precision impedance converter system solution that integrates a frequency generator and a 12-bit, 250 kSPS analog-to-digital converter (ADC) on-chip. The signal generated by the frequency generator is used to excite the external complex impedance, and the response signal of the external impedance is sampled by the on-chip ADC and then processed by the on-chip DSP for discrete Fourier transform (DFT). The DFT algorithm returns a real (R) data word and an imaginary (I) data word at each frequency.
After calibration, it is easy to calculate the impedance amplitude and corresponding impedance phase of each scan frequency point using the following two formulas:
Amplitude = √R2 + I2
Phase = Tan-1 (I/R)
Analog Devices also offers a similar device, the AD5933, a 2.7 V to 5.5 V, 1 MSPS, 12-bit impedance converter with a built-in temperature sensor and a 16-pin SSOP package.
