The AD7396/AD7397 family are dual, pin-compatible 12/10-bit voltage outputs, respectivelyDigital-to-analog conversionwith power-saving features that operate from a +3 V to +5 V supply. The high input impedance reference voltage input has a unique feature that enables the V to be convertedREFConnect to VDD, thus establishing from 0 to VDDComplete DAC output swing. The guaranteed operating voltage range of +2.7 V to +5.5 V makes these devices ideal for battery-powered applications.

A 12-bit latch with a write time of 45 ns enables interfacing with fast processors without the processor having to wait. The double-buffered input architecture allows the input registers to preload data one at a time, and then a load gating connected to the LDA+LDB input updates both DAC outputs simultaneously. In addition, an asynchronous RS input sets the output to zero scale at power-up or when requested by the user. The shutdown mode is controlled directly by the active-low low low pin and drops power consumption to sub-microamps. In the shutdown state, the register data can be changed even if the output buffer is open. When returning to normal operation, the latest data loaded into the DAC registers establishes the output voltage.

Both devices use the same pinout, allowing the user to select the appropriate resolution for the specific application without having to change the board. The main applications of the AD7396/AD7397 include automotive sensor voltage generation and calibration, portable communications, PC peripherals, and digitally controlled calibration.

The AD7396/AD7397 are specified over the industrial temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. The AD7397AN/AD7397AR are specified over the -40°C to +125°C automotive temperature range. The AD7396s and AD7397s are available in both plastic DIP and 24-lead SOIC packages. The AD7397ARU is available in a 1.1 mm, ultrathin TSSOP-24 package for ultracompact applications such as PCMCIA cards.

Both the AD7396 and AD7397 are micropower, single/dual/quad digital-to-analog converters (AD7390 ... AD7398) family with serial or parallel data loading structures.
