    AD8436It is a new generation of precision translinear, low power consumption, true RMS-TO-DCconverterto load multiple options. It accurately calculates the DC equivalent of the RMS value AC waveform, including complex modes powered by switch-mode supplies and controlled by triacs. It is accurate over a wide input level (see Figure 2) and temperature range. With the latest Analog Devices technology, ≤± 0.25% accuracy and ≤ 10 μV output offset are guaranteed. Crest factor error at CF ≤ 10The AD8436 provides true RMS results at a lower cost than misleading peak, mean, or digital solutions. With no programming costs or processor overhead, the 4 mm x 4 mm package easily fits into applications where space is tight. On-chip buffer amplifiers offer the widest selection of all RMS-TO-DC converters regardless of cost. The lowest cost application requires only an external averaging capacitor. The built-in high-impedance FET buffer provides an interface for external attenuators, frequency compensation, or driving low-impedance loads. It has a matched pair of internal resistors for easy gain configurations of 2 or higher, and the usable input range can be extended even lower. The AD8436 features low power, precision input buffering, making it ideal for portable multimeters and other battery-powered applications.

    By eliminating the internal bias current, precision DC output buffers provide very low offset voltages to minimize error when driving low impedance loads. Unlike digital solutions, the AD8436 is not limited by switching circuitry at both high and low amplitudes (see Figure 2). It responds to 3 V, extends dynamic range without external adjustment, and accommodates harsh low-level signal conditions, supporting wide overranges without clamping.

    The AD8436 operates from single or dual supplies and ranges from ±2.4 V (4.8 V) to ±18 V (36 V). Grades A and J are available in a compact 20-pin 4 mm x 4 mm chip-scale package; Grades A and B are also available in 20-pin QSOP packages. There are two operating temperature ranges: −40°C to 125°C for grades A and B, and 0°C to 70°C for J grades.
