The AD8801/AD8803 are potentiometer divider TrimDAC® digital-to-analog converters that provide eight digitally controlled DC voltage outputs that can replace the mechanical regulator function in a new design, making them ideal for DC voltage regulation applications.
The AD8801 features mid-range presets that can be easily programmed via the microcontroller port of the serial interface, making it ideal for replacing potentiometers that are adjusted from nominal values. These devices are ideal for a wide range of applications, such as gain control in video amplifiers, voltage control frequency and bandwidth in video equipment, geometry correction and auto-regulation in CRT computer graphics displays, and more. The AD8803 is capable of independently controlling the top and low ends of the potentiometer voltage divider, allowing the zero-level voltage setting to be determined separately via the VREFL pin. This feature helps to achieve maximum resolution for devices with a limited allowable voltage control range.
Both the AD8801 and AD8803 have eight built-in voltage output digital-to-analog converters (DACs) that share a reference input.
Each DAC has its own DAC registers to maintain its output state, which are updated by an internal serial to parallel shift register that loads data from a standard three-wire serial input digital interface. The data word consisting of 11 data bits is synchronously transmitted to the serial input register, which is decoded and the first 3 bits can determine the address of the DAC register that needs to be loaded with the last 8 bits of data. When powered from a 5 V supply, the AD8801/AD8803 consumes only 5 mA. In addition, the reference input power consumption is reduced to 5 μA in shutdown mode, leaving only the DAC latch settings for use when returning to normal operating mode.
The AD8801/AD8803 are available in 16-pin molded DIP and 1.5 mm, SO-16 surface-mount packages.
