The buck regulator features a proprietary high-speed current mode, constant frequency pulse width modulation (PWM) control scheme for excellent stability and transient response. To ensure maximum battery life for portable applications, the device offers a variable frequency power saving mode that reduces switching frequency at low loads.
The LDO is a low quiescent current, low dropout linear regulator that operates in a separate supply mode and has an input voltage (VIN2) as low as 1.65 V. The low input voltage allows the LDO to be powered by the output of the buck regulator, increasing efficiency and reducing power consumption. ADP2140 operates from 2.3 V to 5.5 V input voltages and can be powered by a single Li+/Li−polymer battery, multiple alkaline/NiMH batteries, PCMCIA, and other standard power supplies.
To minimize the number of external components and increase efficiency, all versions have built-in power switches and synchronous rectifiers. ADP2140 include power-good pins, soft start, and internal compensation. There are many power timing schemes available, and the user can choose from two enable inputs. In automatic timing control mode, the highest voltage output is enabled at the rising edge of EN1. During logic-controlled shutdown, the input is disconnected from the output and the current drawn from the input source is less than 100 nA. Other important features include: undervoltage latching to prevent deep battery discharge; Soft start, used to prevent overshoot of input current during start-up; and short-circuit protection and thermal overload protection circuitry to prevent damage to the device under adverse conditions.
When ADP2140 use two 0603 capacitors, one 0402 capacitor, one 0402 resistor, and one 0805 inductor, the total area of the solution is approximately 90 mm2, which is the smallest size solution to meet the needs of a variety of portable applications.
