The iCoupler gate driver does not require LEDs and photodiodes, providing precision timing characteristics that optocouplers cannot provide. In addition, it does not have the reliability and performance stability issues associated with optocoupler LEDs.
Compared to gate drivers with a high-voltage level-shifting approach, the ADuM1233 has the advantage of true current isolation between the inputs and outputs. Each output can operate up to ±700 VPEAK relative to the input, allowing low-end switching to negative voltage. The differential voltage between the high end and the low end can reach up to 700 VPEAK.
As a result, the ADuM1233 can reliably control the switching characteristics of IGBT/MOSFET configurations over a wide range of positive or negative switching voltages.
