iCoupler devices do not use LEDs and photodiodes, so there are no design difficulties typically associated with optocouplers. The simple iCoupler digital interface and robust performance characteristics eliminate the current transfer ratio uncertainty, nonlinear transfer functions, and temperature and lifetime effects that optocouplers typically have. These iCoupler products do not require external drivers and other discrete devices. In addition, iCoupler devices consume only 1/10 to 1/6 the power of optocouplers at comparable signal data rates.
The ADuM130x isolator provides three independent isolation channels that support multiple channel configurations and data rates (see the "Ordering Guide" section of the datasheet). Both models operate from a 2.7 V to 5.5 V supply voltage, are compatible with low-voltage systems, and can achieve voltage conversion across isolation barriers. In addition, the ADuM130x features low pulse width distortion (CRW level less than 2 ns) and tight channel-to-channel matching (CRW level less than 2 ns). Unlike other optocouplers, the ADuM130x isolator has a patented refresh feature that ensures DC correctness in the absence of input logic conversion and in the absence of a power supply.
