The ADuM1401 is a 3/1-channel directional, four-channel digital isolator based on Analog Devices' iCoupler® technology. These isolated devices combine high-speed CMOS with single-chip air-core transformer technology and offer superior performance characteristics over alternative devices such as optocouplers.
iCoupler devices do not use LEDs and photodiodes, so there are no design difficulties typically associated with optocouplers. The simple iCoupler digital interface and robust performance characteristics eliminate the current transfer ratio uncertainty, nonlinear transfer functions, and temperature and lifetime effects that optocouplers typically have.
These iCoupler products do not require external drivers and other discrete devices. In addition, iCoupler devices consume only 1/10 to 1/6 the power of optocouplers at comparable signal data rates.
The ADuM140x Series isolators provide four independent isolation channels that support multiple channel configurations and data rates (see the "Ordering Guide" section of the datasheet). All models operate from a 2.7 V to 5.5 V supply voltage, are compatible with low-voltage systems, and are capable of voltage conversion across isolation barriers. In addition, the ADuM140x features low pulse width distortion (CRW level less than 2 ns) and tight channel-to-channel matching (CRW level less than 2 ns). Unlike other optocouplers, the ADuM140x isolator features a patented refresh feature that ensures DC correctness in the absence of input logic conversion and in the absence of a single power supply.
