Many microcontroller implementations of USB only provide D+ and D− lines to the external pins. This is in many cases where it requires minimal external components and simplifies the design; However, this poses a challenge when isolation is required. The USB line must automatically switch between actively driving D+/D−, receiving data, and allowing an external resistor to set the bus idle. The ADuM4160 architecture can both detect data flow and control the state of the output buffer. The data flow direction is determined by grouping.
The ADuM4160 combines edge detection-based iCoupler technology with internal logic to enable a transparent, easy-to-configure, upstream-facing port isolator. Isolated upstream ports offer several advantages such as simple circuitry, power management and robust operation.
The propagation delay of this isolator is comparable to that of standard hubs and cables. It can be powered from a supply voltage of 3.1 V to 5.5 V on either side, which can be internally adjusted to the signal level for direct connection to the VBUS. The ADuM4160 isolates the pull-up resistor so that the peripheral can control the connection timing. The device has a low idle current; Suspend mode is required.
