The A3930 and A3931 are 3-phase brushless direct current (BLDC) motor controllers for N-channel external power supply MOSFETs. They integrate the various circuits required to design cost-effective three-phase electric motor drive systems and are specifically designed for automotive applications.
A key requirement for a car is functionality that covers a wide range of input power sources. The unique charge pump regulator provides an appropriate (>10 V) gate drive when the battery voltage is as low as 7 V and allows the device to operate at battery voltages as low as 5 V using a simplified gate driver. Switching the voltage dual mode to dropout mode at a nominal operating voltage of 14 V when the supply voltage is low minimizes power dissipation in the charge pump.
Bootstrap capacitors are used to provide the battery supply voltage described above required by N-channel MOSFETs. The high-end drive internal charge pump allows DC (100% duty cycle) operation.
An internal fixed-frequency PWM current control circuit can be used to regulate the maximum load current. The peak load current limit can be set by selecting the input reference voltage and external induction resistor. The user can set the PWM frequency by selecting an external RC timing network. For additional flexibility, PWM inputs can be used to provide speed/torque control, allowing the internal current control circuitry to set the maximum current limit.
Increase efficiency with synchronous rectification. Integrated cross-control with programmable no-sense time keeps the power FET free from breakdown. A single external resistor can be set for inductive time.
The only difference between the A3930 and A3931 is their response to all-zero combinations on Hall inputs. In this case, the A3930 indicates a logic error, and the A3931 preemptively places the motor in an unstable starting position for use in the microprocessor-driven "sensorless" control system for the starting algorithm.
Both devices are available in a 48-pin LQFP package with an exposed heat shield. It is a small (81 mm2) power package, lead-free, and has a 100% matte tin plated pinframe.
