The Allegro® ACS713 provides an affordable and accurate solution for DC current sensing in industrial, commercial, and communications systems. The device package is easy for customers to implement. Typical applications include motor control, load detection and management, switching power supplies, and overcurrent fault protection. The device is not intended for use in automotive applications.
The device features an accurate low-bias linear Hall sensor circuitry with a copper current path close to the surface of the wafer. The current applied through this copper current path generates a magnetic field that can be sensed by the integrated Hall IC and converted into a proportional voltage. By bringing the magnetic signal closer to the Hall sensor, the device accuracy is optimized. The precise proportional voltage is provided by a stabilized chopper-type low-bias BiCMOS Hall IC that is factory-programmed for accuracy.
The output of the device has a positive slope (>VIOUT(Q)) as the current rises through the main copper current path used as the current sensing path, from pins 1 and 2 to pins 3 and 4. The internal resistance of this conduction path is typically 1.2 mΩ, which has a low power consumption. The thickness of the copper wire allows the device to operate under overcurrent conditions of up to 5×. The terminal end of the conduction path is electrically isolated from the sensor pins (pins 5 to 8). This allows the ACS713 current sensor IC to be used in applications where electrical isolation is required without the use of photoisolators or other expensive insulation technologies.
The ACS713 is available in a small, surface-mount SOIC8 package. Pin holder plating is 100% matte tin plating and is compatible with standard lead-free (Pb) printed circuit board assembly processes. Internally, the device is lead-free, with the exception of the flip method using high-temperature leaded solder balls, which are currently exempt from RoHS. The device is fully calibrated prior to shipment.
