The ATS616 gear tooth sensor IC is a peak detection device that uses automatic gain control and integrated capacitors to provide fairly accurate gear edge detection even at very low operating speeds. Each package includes a high-temperature plastic housing that integrates samarium-cobalt magnets, electrodes, and a differential-splitter collector Hall IC optimized for magnetic circuits. The small package can be easily assembled and used in different gear shapes and sizes.
The technology used for this circuit is based on the Hall effect. The chip incorporates a two-element Hall IC that switches in response to differential magnetic signals generated by ferrite targets. This complex processing circuit contains an A-to-D converter that calibrates (normalizes) the internal gain of the device to minimize the effect of air gap changes. The patented peak detection filter circuit eliminates magnet and system offsets and distinguishes between relatively rapid changes such as those caused by tilt, gear swing, and eccentricity. This easy-to-integrate solution provides first tooth detection and stable operation with very low revolutions per minute. The ATS616 replaces the ATS612LSB by eliminating the need for an external peak hold capacitor required by the ATS612LSB.
The ATS616 is ideal when the system uses a gear tooth configuration to collect speed, position, and timing information. The device is ideal for applications that require extremely precise duty cycle control or accurate edge detection, such as automotive camshaft sensing.
The ATS616 is available in a 4-pin single in-line package (SIP) that is Pb-free and has 100% matte tin leadframe plating.
