The Regulator LM2594/LM2594HV series is a monolithic integrated circuit that provides all buck-active (buck-boost) switching regulators to drive an excellent line and load regulation of 0.5A load capacity. The devices are available in 3.3V and 5V fixed output voltages, 12V, and an adjustable output version, and are available in an 8-pin DIP package and an 8-pin surface mount package.
Requiring a minimum number of external components, these regulators are simple to use, with internal frequency compensation †, fixed frequency oscillators, and improved line and load regulation specifications.
The LM2594/LM2594HV series operates at 150 kHz switching frequencies that allow small form factors to be filtered than low frequency switching regulators that require filtering elements. Due to their high efficiency, copper wires on printed circuit boards usually only need heat dissipation.
A series of inductors (including through-hole and surface mount types) is optimized from several different manufacturers using the LM2594/LM2594HV series. This feature greatly simplifies the design of switching power supplies.
Other features include a pair of output voltage guaranteed ± all conditions for input voltage and output load conditions and ± 15% oscillator frequency at an error of around 4%. External shutdown is included with a typical standby current of 85μA. The self-protection feature includes a two-stage frequency-reduced output switch and a complete protection, current limit in the event of an over-temperature shutdown fault.
