The regulator's LM2594/LM2594HV series is a monolithic integrated circuit that provides a positive buck (buck) switching regulator capable of driving a great line and all the functions of a load regulation of 0.5A load. The devices are available in 3.3V, 5V, 12V, and adjustable output versions with fixed output voltages and are available in an 8-pin DIP package and an 8-pin surface-mount package.
Requiring a minimum number of external components, these regulators are simple to use, feature internal frequency compensation †, fixed frequency oscillators, and improve line and load regulation specifications.
The LM2594/LM2594HV series switches at 150 kHz, thus enabling smaller sizes with lower frequency switching regulators required filter assemblies. Due to their high efficiency, copper traces on printed circuit boards are often the only heat dissipation needs.
The standard inductor series (through-hole and surface mount types) are available from the LM2594/LM2594HV series and are optimized for use by several different manufacturers. This feature greatly simplifies the design of switching power supplies.
Other features include a guaranteed 4% tolerance under all conditions under the input voltage and output load conditions of the ± output voltage, and a frequency of ± 15% for the oscillator. Includes external shutdown with a typical 85μA standby current. Self-protection features include two-stage frequency reduction output switching and current limiting, complete protection in over-temperature shutdown fault conditions.
