The LM2596 series regulators are monolithic integrated circuits that provide all the active functions for buck switching regulators (bucks), driving an excellent line and load regulation of 3A load capacity. These devices are available in 3.3V, 5V, 12V, and adjustable output versions with fixed output voltages.
Requiring a minimal number of external components, these regulators are easy to use, include an internal frequency compensation †, and a fixed frequency oscillator.
The LM2596 series switches at 150 kHz, thus enabling smaller sizes with lower frequency switching regulators required filter assemblies. In a standard 5-pin TO-220 package with several different options that result in bending, and a 5-pin TO-263 surface-mount package.
The standard inductor series can be produced from several different manufacturers optimized for the LM2596 series used. This feature greatly simplifies the design of switching power supplies.
Other features include a guaranteed tolerance of 4% of the output voltage under ± specified input voltage and output load conditions, as well as a ± of 15% of the oscillator frequency. Includes external shutdown with a typical 80μA standby current. Self-protection features include two-stage frequency reduction output switching and current limiting, complete protection in over-temperature shutdown fault conditions.
