The LM2596 series of regulators are monolithic integrated circuits that provide all the active functions for step-down switching regulators (bucks), driving an excellent line and load regulation 3A load capacity. These devices are available with fixed output voltages in 3.3V, 5V, 12V, and adjustable output versions.
Requiring a minimum number of external components, these regulators are easy to use, include internal frequency compensation †, and fix frequency oscillators.
The LM2596 series switches at 150 kHz so that smaller sizes will be required with lower frequency switching regulators. Available in a standard 5-pin TO-220 package with several different bending options, as well as a 5-pin TO-263 surface mount package.
The standard inductor series can be produced from several different manufacturers optimized using the LM2596 series. This feature greatly simplifies the design of switching power supplies.
Other features include a guaranteed tolerance of 4% of the output voltage ± specified input voltage and output load, and a ± 15% of the oscillator frequency. Includes external shutdown with typical 80μA standby current. Self-protection features include two-stage frequency reduction output switching and current limiting, complete protection under overtemperature shutdown fault conditions.
