The regulator's LM2597/LM2597HV series are monolithic integrated circuits that offer aggressive buck (buck) switching regulators capable of driving an excellent line and load regulation of all the features of a 0.5A load. These devices are available in fixed output voltages in 3.3V, 5V, 12V and adjustable output versions and are packaged in an 8-pin DIP and 8-pin surface mount packages.
This series of switching regulators is similar to the LM2594 series, adding additional regulatory and performance features.
Requiring a minimum number of external components, these regulators are simple to use and include internal frequency compensation †, improved line and load specifications, fixed frequency oscillators, shutdown/soft start, error flag delay, and error flag output.
The LM2597/LM2597HV series switch at 150 kHz, thus making the smaller size with the lower frequency switching regulator required for the filter assembly. Due to their high efficiency, copper traces of printed circuit boards are often the only heat dissipation needs.
Standard inductor series (through-hole and surface mount types) can be optimized from several different manufacturers from the LM2597/LM2597HV series. This feature greatly simplifies the design of switching power supplies.
Other features include guaranteed 4% tolerance under all conditions under input voltage and output load conditions ± output voltage, and 15% frequency ± oscillator. Includes external shutdown, typically with 85μA standby current. Self-protection features include a two-stage current limit, output switching, and complete protection under overtemperature shutdown fault conditions.
The LM2597HV is required in applications and input voltages up to 60V.
