The LM2599 series regulators are monolithic integrated circuits that provide all the active functions for buck switching regulators (bucks), driving an excellent line and load regulation of 3A load capacity. These devices are available in 3.3V, 5V, 12V, and adjustable output versions with fixed output voltages.
This series of switching regulators LM2596 is similar and adds additional regulatory and performance features.
Requiring a minimal number of external components, these regulators are simple to use and include internal frequency compensation †, improved line and load specifications, fixed frequency oscillators, shutdown/soft start, error flag delay, and error flag output.
The LM2599 series switches at 150 kHz, thus enabling smaller size with lower frequency switching regulators required filter components. The standard 7-pin TO-220 package differs from several options that result in bending, and the 7-pin TO-263 surface mount package.
The standard inductor series (through-hole and surface mount types) can be produced from several different manufacturers optimized for the LM2599 series used. This feature greatly simplifies the design of switching power supplies.
Other features include a guaranteed 4% tolerance under all conditions under the input voltage and output load conditions of the ± output voltage, and a frequency of ± 15% for the oscillator. Includes external shutdown with a typical 80μA standby current. Self-protection features include a two-stage current limit, output switch, and complete protection in the event of an over-temperature shutdown fault.
