illustrate
The LM117 Positive Series adjustable three-terminal regulator is capable of supplying an output range of over 1.5A 1.2V to 37V. They are very easy to use and only require two external resistors to set the output voltage. In addition, both line and load regulation are better than standard fixed voltage regulators. In addition, the LM117 is packaged in a standard transistor for easy installation and handling of the package.
In addition to higher than fixed voltage regulation performance, the LM117 series provides complete overload protection for IC use only. Includes current limiting on the chip, overheating protection, and protection of the safe zone. All overload protection circuits remain fully functional, even if the adjustment terminal is disconnected.
Typically, this is not necessary unless the capacitor device is more than 6 inches away from the input bypass input filter capacitor in this case. Optional output capacitors can be added to improve transient response. Adjustment terminals can be bypassed to achieve very high ripple rejection ratios that are difficult to achieve with standard three-terminal regulators.
In addition to replacing fixed regulators, the LM117 is useful in a variety of other applications. Since regulators are "floating" and believe that there is only an input-to-output differential voltage, a power supply of a few hundred volts can be as long as the maximum input-output difference does not exceed the specified limit, i.e., avoid short-circuit output.
In addition, it enables a particularly simple adjustable switching regulator, a programmable output regulator, or connection between adjustment pins and output fixed resistors, and the LM117 can be used as a precision current regulator. Turning off the electronics can achieve clamping adjustment of the terminal ground which programs to the 1.2V output, which is the most attractive for small current loads.
For applications that require greater output current, see the LM150 Series (3A) and LM138 Series (5A) datasheets. For a negative addition, see the LM137 series datasheet.
