illustrate
The LM117 Positive Series of adjustable three-terminal regulators is oversupplied with the capability over the 1.5A 1.2V to 37V output range. They are very easy to use and only require two external resistors to set the output voltage. In addition, both line and load regulation is better than standard fixed regulators. In addition, the LM117 is packaged in standard transistors for easy installation and handling of the package.
In addition to higher than fixed regulation performance, the LM117 series provides complete overload protection only for IC use. Includes current limit, overtemperature protection and protection of safe zones on the chip. All overload protection circuitry remains fully functional, even if the adjustment terminal is disconnected.
Typically, it is not necessary unless the capacitor device is more than 6 inches away from the capacitor in which case an input bypass input filter capacitor is required. An optional output capacitor can be added to improve transient response. The trim terminal can be bypassed to achieve very high ripple rejection ratios that are difficult to achieve with standard three-terminal regulators.
In addition to replacing fixed regulators, the LM117 is very useful in a variety of other applications. Since regulators are "floating" and consider only input-to-output differential voltages, power supplies of several hundred volts can be as long as the maximum input-output difference does not exceed the specified value, i.e. avoid short-circuit outputs.
In addition, it enables a particularly simple adjustable switching regulator, a programmable output regulator, or a fixed resistor between the adjustment pin and the output, and the LM117 can be used as a precision current regulator. Turning off electronics can be achieved by clamping the end ground which programs to the 1.2V output, which most attracts small current loads.
For applications requiring higher output current, see the LM150 Series (3A) and LM138 Series (5A) datasheets. For negative additions, see the LM137 series data sheet.
