The LM140/LM340A/LM340/LM78XXC monolithic 3-positive voltage regulators are compensated for by internal current limiting, thermal shutdown, and safety zones, making them essentially indestructible. If sufficient heat dissipation is provided, they can provide an output current of over 1.0A. Their purpose is to provide a wide range of applications for fixed voltage regulators, including local (on-card) for noise cancellation and regulation of distribution issues related to single-point regulation. In addition to using a fixed regulator, these devices can use external components to obtain adjustable output voltage and current.
A lot of effort has been put into making the entire range of regulators easy to use, minimizing the number of external components. This is not necessary to bypass the output, although this does not improve transient response. Only when adjusting the power filter capacitor at a long distance does the input need to be bypassed.
5V, 12V, and 15V regulator options are available in steel power packages TO - 3. The LM340A/LM340/LM78XXC series is available in TO-220 plastic power packages, LM340-5.0 SOT-223 packages, and LM340-5.0 and LM340-12 surface mount to 263 packages.
