The LM3431 drivers 3 external NPN transistors or MOSFETs to provide a high-accuracy constant current of 3 LED strings. The output current is adjustable to drive strings in excess of 200 mA. The expandable LM3431 drives up to 6 LED strings. The boost controller drives an external NFET's input voltage boost regulation switch between 5V and 36V. The LM3431 features LED cathode feedback to minimize adjustment margins and optimize efficiency. The DIM input pin controls the brightness of the LED from an analog or digital control signal. Dimming frequencies up to 25 kHz may have a contrast ratio of 100:1. It is possible to have a contrast ratio of 1000:1 at lower dimming frequencies. The LM3431 eliminates audible noise and maintains constant output voltage regulation in LED dimming. Other features include LED short-circuit and open-circuit protection, fault delay/error flag, cyclic current limiting, thermal shutdown ICs, and LED arrays.
