It can safely charge and maintain a single cell, operating from an AC adapter or USB-powered polymer battery. The USB/AC input power source selection is automatic. At present, there are two power sources, and AC power has priority. When the AC wall adapter allows the charging current to operate from 50 mA to 1000 mA, the charging current is programmed via an external resistor. When the battery is charged, it is powered by USB and the charging current is optional from the 100 mA or 500 mA pins. The termination voltage is controlled over a range of 4.2V± 0.35%. The LM3658 requires few external components and integrated internal power FETs, reverse current protection, and current sensing. Internal power FETs, thermally regulated, to obtain the most efficient charging rate for a given ambient temperature. LM3658 operates in five modes: pre-qualification mode, constant current mode, constant voltage mode, top shutdown mode and maintenance mode. In addition, the charger IC is in "LDO mode", and there is no battery when the AC adapter on the wall is connected. Optimal battery management is achieved through thermal regulation, battery temperature measurement, and multiple safety timers.
