The LM431 is a three-terminal adjustable shunt regulator that operates over temperature for temperature stability. At any level greater than 2.5V (V REF), the output voltage can be set simply by selecting two external resistors as the voltage is divided into a network of up to 36V. Due to its sharp characteristics, this device is an excellent replacement for many Zener diode applications.
