The LM5009 switching regulator provides all the features needed to achieve a low-cost, high-efficiency, step-down bias regulator. This device is capable of driving a 150 mA load current from a 9.5V to 95V input source. Depending on the input and output voltages, the switching frequency can exceed 600 kHz. The output voltage is available from 2.5V to 85V. Such a high voltage regulator contains an N-channel buck switch and an internal start-up regulator. The device is available in easy-to-implement MSOP-8 and thermally enhanced LLP-8 packages. The LM5009 is a well-suited alternative to monolithic high-voltage or discrete linearity where power losses become unacceptable. The operation of the regulator is based on the control plan to use ON inversely proportional to the VIN. This feature allows the operating frequency to remain relatively constant under the change of load and input voltage. The requirements of the control plan do not require loop compensation, resulting in an ultra-fast transient response. The implementation of smart current limiting forced shutdown time is inversely proportional to VOUT. This scheme ensures short-circuit protection while providing minimal turnback. Other features include: thermal shutdown, VCC undervoltage lockout, gate drive undervoltage lockout, and maximum duty cycle limiting.
