The LM5118 Wide Voltage Range Buck-Boost Switching Regulator Controller has all the necessary features to implement a high-performance, low-cost, high-efficiency buck-boost regulator using minimal external components. The buck-boost topology maintains output voltage regulation when the input voltage is less than or greater than the output voltage, making it particularly suitable for automotive applications. The LM5118 operates as a buck regulator while the input voltage is large enough than the output voltage and the buck-boost mode gradually transitions to an input voltage close to the output. This dual-mode method maintains an input voltage that exceeds a wide regulation range with the best conversion efficiency in buck mode and no interference output during mode conversion. This easy-to-use controller includes drivers for high-side buck MOSFETs and low-side boost MOSFETs. The regulator is controlled using an analog current ramp according to the current mode. Analog current-mode control reduces the sensitivity of the pulse-width modulation circuit of noise, allowing for reliable control necessary for very small duty cycles in high input voltage applications. Other protection features include current limit, thermal shutdown, and enable input. Enhanced TSSOP-20 packages are available in power equipment with an exposed die bonding pad to aid in heat dissipation.
