The front three-terminal regulator LM78LXX series is with several fixed output voltages that make them beneficial in a wide range of applications. When used as an alternative to Zener diodes/resistors, in LM78LXX it often results in a two-order increase in effective output impedance and a reduction in quiescent current. These regulators provide a place for card regulation, eliminating the issues associated with single point distribution regulation. This voltage allows LM78LXX solid state for use in logic systems, instrumentation, audio, and other electronic devices.

The LM78LXX is available in TO-92(Z) package, plastic SO-8(M) package, and chip size package (8-bump micro SMD) using National Semiconductor's micro SMD packaging technology. With ample sinking regulation heat, 100mA output current is delivered. The current limit is the limit that contains the peak output current limited to a safe value. The safety zone protection for the output transistor is to limit internal power consumption. If the heat from the internal power consumption is too high to provide sinking, the thermal shutdown circuit takes over the IC to prevent overheating.
