The front-of-three-terminal regulated LM78LXX series is beneficial with several fixed output voltages making them beneficial in a wide range of applications. When used as an alternative to Zener diodes/resistors, the LM78LXX typically results in an order of magnitude increase in effective output impedance and a decrease in quiescent current. These regulators can provide a place for card regulation, eliminating the problems associated with regulation of single-point distribution. This voltage allows the LM78LXX to be used solid-state in logic systems, instrumentation, audio and other electronic devices.

The LM78LXX is available in plastic TO-92(Z) package, plastic SO-8(M) package, and chip size package (8 solder ball micro SMD) using National Semiconductor's micro SMD packaging technology. With sufficient sink regulation, heat is provided to deliver 100mA of output current. Current limit is a safe value that contains peak output current limit. Secure zone protection for output transistors is to limit internal power consumption. If the heat dissipated too much internally provides a sink, thermal shutdown circuitry takes over to prevent the IC from overheating.
