The LM78LXX series three-terminal active regulator is several fixed output voltages, making them very useful in a wide range of applications. When used as a Zener diode/resistor combination, the LM78LXX typically results in an order of magnitude improvement in an effective output impedance and lower quiescent current. These regulators provide on-site regulation, eliminating the problems associated with single-point regulation distribution. The available voltage allows use in LM78LXX logic systems, instrumentation, audio and other solid-state electronics.

LM78LXX is a micro SMD packaging technology used in plastic TO-92(Z) packages, plastic SO-8(M) packages and chip size packages (8 solder ball micro SMD). With sufficient sink regulator heat, 100mA of output current can be delivered. Current limiting, which consists of limiting the peak output current to a safe value. Output transistor safe zone protection limits internal power consumption. If the internal power consumption is too high, the supplied heat sinks, and the thermal shutdown circuit prevents the overtemperature IC from taking over.
