The three-terminal positive voltage regulators, the LM341 and LM78MXX series, feature built-in current limiting, thermal shutdown, and safe operating area protection, which makes them virtually untouched by output overload.
With sufficient heat dissipation, they can provide more than 0.5A of output current. Typical applications will include local (card) regulators that can eliminate noise and performance degradation associated with single point regulation.
