The LM8801 step-down DC-DC converter is an ultra-low voltage circuit optimized for power supply from a single lithium-ion battery and an input voltage rail from 2.3V to 5.5V. It can provide up to 600 mA of load current over the entire input voltage range.

The LM8801 has a mode control pin that allows the user to select continuous PWM operation over the entire load range or automatic PFM - PWM mode, which automatically changes depending on the load. In PWM mode, the device operates at a fixed frequency of 6 MHz (typical). In automatic PFM-PWM mode, hysteresis, PFM extends by reducing quiescent current at light loads and the life of the system's backup battery.

The LM8801 is available in a 6-bump micro SMD package. Only three compact external surface mount components, an inductor and two capacitors, are required.
