Remote and local temperature sensors have been integrated with integrated LM96163 fan control, including TruTherm BJT transistor testing remote diode sensor compensation technology. Accurate LM96163 measures: (1) its own temperature and (2) the discovery temperature of the transistor to which the diode is connected, such as 2N3904, or the thermal diode commonly used computer processors, graphics processing units (GPUs) and other ASICs. The LM96163 offset registers to correct errors caused by different non-ideal other thermal diode factors.

The LM96163 also features an integrated, pulse-width modulated (PWM) open-drain fan-controlled output. Fan speed depends on a combination of multiple remote temperature readings, lookup tables, and register settings. A 12-step lookup table (LUT) that allows the user to transfer a function of nonlinear fan speed versus temperature is typically used for quiet fan noise. An additional fully programmable ramp feature has been added to allow smooth transitions between LUT setpoints.
