Der LM555 ist ein hochstabiles Gerät, das präzise Zeitverzögerungen oder Schwingungen erzeugt. Andere Anschlüsse bieten bei Bedarf einen Auslöser oder einen Rücksetzer. Im chirurgischen Zeitverzögerungsmodus wird die Zeit durch einen externen Widerstand und Kondensator präzise gesteuert. Für den Betrieb als instationärer Oszillator steuern die freilaufende Frequenz und das Tastverhältnis zwei externe Widerstände und einen Kondensator präzise an. Die Schaltung kann Wellenformen mit fallender Flanke auslösen und zurücksetzen, bis zu 200 mA Ausgangsschaltung erzeugen oder senken oder TTL-Schaltkreise ansteuern.
