The LMV431, LMV431A and LMV431B are precision shunt regulators with the ability to adjust 1.24V to 30V. The cathode voltage is controlled from the negative feedback adjustment pin, much like a non-inverting op-amp configuration (reference symbol and function diagram). The two resistor dividers control a 1.24V bandgap reference gain at the termination of the adjustment pin. The adjustment pin (voltage follower) of the short-circuit cathode provides a 1.24V cathode voltage.

The LMV431, on the other hand, has an initial tolerance of 1.5%, 1% and 0.5% respectively for LMV431A and LMV431B, and lends itself the functionality to perform several applications in the low-voltage Zener diode type. Applications include a 2.7V low-dropout regulator, an error amplifier for a 3V off-line switching regulator, and even as a 3V voltage detector. These components are typically stable at less than 10nF and less than 50pF capacitive loads.
