These circuits feature a rugged bipolar design that provides operating system fault tolerance and ESD protection that competing CMOS designs cannot match. Using only 0.1μF external capacitors, these circuits consume only 40mW of power and can operate up to 120K baud rates, even when driving large capacitive loads. The new ESD structure on the chip allows LT1180A/LT1181A to survive multiple ± 10kV blows, eliminating the need for expensive TransZorbs ® for RS232 line pins. LT1180A/LT1181A is fully compliant with EIA RS232. The driver outputs protection against overload and can be short-circuited to ground or up to ± 30V without damage. In the event of a shutdown or power failure, the driver and receiver outputs in a high-impedance state, allowing row sharing. LT1181A are available in 16-pin DIP and SO packages. LT1180A is available in 18-pin DIP and SO packages, and the application needs to be turned off.
