® The LT 1280A/LT1281A integral charge pump dual RS232 driver/receiver pair generates a single 5V supply for RS232 voltage levels. These circuits feature a rugged bipolar design that provides operating system fault tolerance and ESD protection that competing CMOS designs cannot match. Using only 0.1μF external capacitors, these circuits consume only 40mW of power and can operate 120kbaud or even high capacitance loads while driving. The new ESD structure on the chip allows LT1280A/LT1281A to survive multiple ± 10kV blows, eliminating the RS232 line pins required expensive TransZorbs ®. LT1280A/LT1281A is fully compliant with EIA RS232 standards. The driver outputs protection against overload and can be short-circuited to ground or up to ± 30V without damage. In the event of a shutdown or power failure, the driver and receiver outputs in a high-impedance state, allowing row sharing.

LT1281A are available in 16-pin DIP and SO packages. LT1280A is to provide 18-pin DIP and SO packages that require the application to be turned off.
