The circuit features a rugged bipolar design that provides fault tolerance and ESD protection for operating systems unmatched by competing CMOS designs. Using only 0.1μF external capacitors, the circuit consumes only 40mW of power and can operate 120kbaud or even high capacitance loads while driving. The new ESD structure on the chip allows the LT1381 to survive multiple ± 10kV strikes, eliminating the need for expensive TransZorbs ® RS232 line pins. The driver outputs protection against overload and can be short-circuited to ground or up to ± 25V without damage. In the event of a power failure, the driver and receiver outputs are in a high-impedance state, allowing row sharing.
