An important feature of the LT3080 is its ability to provide a wide output voltage range. Using a reference current flowing through a single resistor, the output voltage can be set to any level between 0V and 36V. The LT3080 is stable when using a 2.2μF capacitor at the output, and the IC uses small ceramic capacitors that require no additional ESR, which other regulators often fail to do.

The internal protection circuitry includes current limiting and thermal limiting. The LT3080 regulator is available in an 8-pin MSOP (with an exposed gasket for improved thermal characteristics), 3mm x 3mm DFN, 5-pin DD-Pak, TO-220, and a simple-to-use 3-pin SOT-223 package.
