®The LT 4356 surge suppressor protects the load from damage caused by high-voltage transients. It is capable of adjusting the output during overvoltage processes (e.g., load dump in automotive applications) by controlling the gate of an external N-channel MOSFET. The output is limited to a safe value, allowing the load to continue operating. The LT4356-1 also monitors the voltage drop between the VCC and SNS pins to prevent it from being affected by an overcurrent fault. An internal amplifier is used to limit the current sense voltage to 50mV. Regardless of the fault condition, the timer starts inversely proportional to the MOSFET stress. If the timer operation is terminated, the FLT pin will be pulled to low to warn of "power loss imminent". If this condition persists, the MOSFET will shut down. After a cooldown cycle, the GATE pin is pulled high to switch on the MOSFET again.
The backup amplifier can be used as a voltage-sense comparator or a linear regulator controller to drive an external PNP transistor. sensor
Back-to-back FETs can be used in place of Schottky diodes to provide reverse input protection, reducing voltage drop and power loss. For the LT4356-1, a single shutdown pin reduces the quiescent current during its shutdown to less than 7uA. The LT4356-2, on the other hand, differs from the LT4356-1 in that it reduces quiescent current to 60uA during downtime and keeps the auxiliary amplifier in operation for use such as undervoltage latching circuitry or always-on regulators.
