The LTC®1196/LTC1198 is a 600ns, 8-bit A/D converter with a sampling frequency of up to 1MHz. They are available in an 8-pin SO package and use a 3V to 6V operating power supply. Power consumption is only 10mW (with a 3V supply) or 50mW with a 5V supply. When no conversion operation is performed, the LTC1198 will automatically lose power, and the typical supply current is only 1nA. These 8-bit switching capacitor successive approximation ADCs include sampling and protection circuitry. LTC1196 has a differential analog input; LTC1198 provides a software-selectable two-channel MUX.

The three-wire serial I/O, SO-8 package, 3V operating voltage, and extremely high sample rate-to-power ratio make these ADCs ideal for compact, high-speed systems. These ADCs can be used in proportional applications or with external references. The high impedance analog input and the ability to operate over a reduced span (LTC1196) of less than 1V full scale allow direct connection to the signal source in many applications, eliminating the need for additional gain stages. Class A devices are specificationd for a total unadjusted error of ±1/2LSB (maximum) over the entire temperature range.
