The LTC®4070 enables simple charging of lithium-ion/lithium-polymer batteries from very low-current, intermittent or continuous charging sources. Operating currents from 450nA to 50mA enable charging from previously unusable power sources. By adding an external path device, the shunt current can be increased to 500mA. When parallel charging is used, the inherent balance of the high-voltage battery pack of the stacked battery is achieved. With its low operating current, LTC4070 is well-suited for charging thin-film batteries in energy harvesting applications, where the charging power supply may be intermittent or very low-power. LTC4070's unique architecture results in an extremely simple battery charger solution; Only one external resistor is required.
LTC4070 provides a pin-selectable float voltage with an accuracy of up to 1% over the entire operating temperature and parallel current range. The device's integrated battery thermal suitability regulator extends battery life by automatically reducing the battery float voltage when the NTC thermistor temperature is above 40ºC. LTC4070 also offers low and high battery state outputs. For applications requiring package protection, refer to LTC4071.
The device is available in two thermally enhanced packages, a compact and low profile (only 0.75mm height) 8-pin (2mm x 3mm) DFN package, and an 8-pin MSOP package.
