The LTC®487 is a low-power differential bus/line driver designed for multipoint data transmission standard RS485 applications with an extended common-mode range (-7V to 12V). They are also RS422 compliant.
Compared to its bipolar counterpart, the CMOS design offers significant energy savings without sacrificing ruggedness against overload or ESD damage.
The driver has a three-state output, and the driver output maintains high impedance over the entire common-mode range. A thermal shutdown circuit is used to prevent excessive power consumption caused by bus contention or failure, which forces the driver output into a high-impedance state.
Both AC and DC specifications are guaranteed over the 0°C to 70°C (commercial), -40°C to 85°C (industrial) temperature range, and the 4.75V to 5.25V supply voltage range.
