The MAX9516 operates from a single 1.8V supply, amplifies standard-definition video signals and consumes only 6MW of quiescent power and 12MW of average power consumption. The MAX9516 uses Maxim's DirectDrive™ technology. The MAX9516, combined with external 1.8V positive DirectDrive technology, is capable of pushing 2V into a 150Ω loadPPVideo signal. The MAX9516 has the ability to detect and report the presence of a video load and reduce power consumption when the load is absent.

The MAX9516 detects the presence of a video load and reports changes in the load via the LOAD flag. This feature helps reduce overall system power consumption because the video encoder and the MAX9516 only need to be turned on when video is connected to the load. When no load is connected, the MAX9516 is placed in an active sense mode and consumes only 31μW.

Maxim's DirectDrive technology eliminates the need for a large number of output coupling capacitors and sets the output video black level close to ground. DirectDrive requires an integrated charge pump and internal linear regulator to create a clean negative supply that allows the amplifier to pull ground synchronization below. The charge pump injects so little noise that it is obviously flawless to the picture-to-video output.

The MAX9516 features an internal reconstruction filter that smoothes the steps and reduces spikes in the video signal from the video digital-to-analog converter (DAC). The reconstruction filter typically has a passband flatness of 7.5MHz of ±1 dB and an attenuation of 46 dB (typical) at 27MHz.

The input of the MAX9516 can be connected directly to the output of the video DAC. The MAX9516 also features a transparent input sync head clamp that allows AC coupling of different DC-biased input signals.

The MAX9516 has an internally fixed gain of 8. The input full-scale range of the video signal is nominally 0.25VPPand a comprehensive video signal output, nominally 2VPP。
