MAX9516 operates from a single 1.8V supply, amplifying standard definition video signals and consuming only static power of 6MW and 12MW of average power consumption. MAX9516 uses Maxim's DirectDrive™ technology. MAX9516 combined with an external 1.8V positive supply DirectDrive technology is capable of pushing a 150Ω load to provide a 2V PP video signal. MAX9516 has the ability to detect and report the presence of a video load and reduce power consumption when the load is non-existent.

MAX9516 the presence of a detectable video load and report changes in the load with the LOAD flag. This feature helps reduce overall system power consumption because the video encoder and MAX9516 video connection only need to be turned on when the load is on. If there is no connected load, MAX9516 placed in an active detection mode consumes only 31μW.

Maxim's DirectDrive technology eliminates a lot of output coupling capacitors and sets the output video black level close to the ground. The DirectDrive requires an integrated charge pump and internal linear regulator to create a clean negative power supply that allows the amplifier to pull the ground below in sync. With so little charge pump injection, it's clearly a flawless picture-to-video output noise.

MAX9516 has an internal reconstruction filter that smooths the steps and reduces the spikes of the video signal from the video digital-to-analog converter (DAC). Reconstruction filters typically have a passband flatness of 7.5MHz of ±1 dB with an attenuation of 46 dB (typical) at 27MHz.

The MAX9516 input can be directly connected to the output of the video DAC. MAX9516 also features a transparent input sync head clamp, allowing for AC coupling of different DC bias input signals.

MAX9516 has an internal fixed gain of 8. The input of the video signal is nominally 0.25V PP and the full video signal output is nominally 2V PP.
