Texas Instruments' MSP430 ultra-low-power microcontroller family includes multiple devices with peripheral sets for a variety of different applications. The architecture, with five low-power modes combined, is optimized to achieve extended battery life in portable measurement applications. The device features a powerful 16-bit RISC CPU, 16-bit registers, and attributes to maximize code efficiency and constant generator. The digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) allows wake-up from low-power mode in less than 6 microseconds in active mode.

The MSP430x13x and MSP430x14x(1) series microcontrollers are configured with two built-in 16-bit timers, a fast 12-bit A/D converter (not implemented on the MSP430F14x1 device), one or two general-purpose serial synchronous/asynchronous communication interfacers (USARTs), and 48 I/O pins.
