Texas Instruments' MSP430 ultra-low-power microcontroller family includes multiple devices with peripheral sets for a variety of different applications. The architecture, combined with five low-power modes, is optimized to extend battery life in portable measurement applications. The device has a powerful 16-bit RISC CPU, 16-bit registers, and attributes to maximize code efficiency constantly. A digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) allows wake-up from a low-power mode in active mode in less than 6 microseconds.

The MSP430x13x and MSP430x14x(1) series microcontrollers are configured with two built-in 16-bit timers, a fast 12-bit A/D converter (as opposed to being implemented in the MSP430F14x1 device), one or two universal serial synchronous/asynchronous communication interfaces (USARTs), and 48 I/O pins.
